During the 12th century, in the heart of Goryeo dynasty in the city of Gaeseong there lived groups of artisans, scholars and traders. There lived a potter named Eun-chae. Her family crafted pottery for generations. Eunchae had a dream of creating something unique , something that no one has seen before. She decided to create a celadon vase that would capture the spirit of her homeland.
Eun-chae’s father often spoke about the jade soul that only a true celadon can possess. A kind of a glow that comes from within but Eun-chae’s early attempts brought cracks to her vases, the glaze always dulled slowly her hopes started to fade. Then came one night when Eun-chae wandered around the banks of river Daedong. There she met an old monk who was reciting a prayer about harmony between earth, water and fire. Soon she realised that her pottery needed more than a skill that was patience and balance.
Months after months passed Eun-chae kept on experimenting. To her learning she added listening to the river’s flow, study of the clay texture and observing the fire flames. After the countless failures she created a small vase, after its cooling she opened its kiln making her heart pounding. Her eyes glowed as she saw the vase was shimmering with luminous jade green glaze. It looked smooth, flawless and alive. Soon, this news spread all over and finally reached the royal court. Upon looking at the vase the king declared it as a national treasure that symbolize harmony of the Goryeo people.
Today Eunchae’s story has become a legend and the vase has been inspiring to the artisans. Eun-chae’s craft reminds us about the true beauty that is born from perseverance, harmony and courage to dream beyond failure.
